Title Sequence

Project Overview

For my Digital Editing I class we had to create a how to video then a 30-second long title sequence in my Motion Graphics class to complement my video on how to tape a hockey stick. The sequence features shots of essential hockey gear (stick, gloves, skates, helmet) with blue and yellow colors dynamically revealing the credits. The goal was to give the viewer a feel for the tutorial’s sporty, fast-paced vibe right from the start.

The Idea

The project needed a title treatment and three credits, so I wanted to keep it simple yet energetic, matching the intensity of hockey. I chose yellow and blue as the main colors since they matched the gear I had. These colors sweep across the screen to unveil the title and credits, while close-up shots of gear set the scene.

Inspiration

I wanted the sequence to feel like something you’d see in a sports gear commercial or an NHL promo. Quick cuts, dynamic transitions, and high-contrast shots of the gear give it that intense, polished look. I also looked at some videos to help figure out how to smoothly reveal the text using color swipes.

Gathering Content

I wanted to get high quality videos on my hockey gear to put into the Title Sequence. I went into the lab and used a turn table to get the videos I needed. I had to make sure the lighting was perfect so the background stayed black.

Challenges

  • Timing the transitions: I didn’t want the text to come in too quickly, so I had to carefully pace it to allow the audience enough time to read the credits without slowing down the energy.
  • Consistency across gear shots: Since the gear had different textures and lighting, I made sure to use consistent color grading so it all looked uniform and polished.

Conclusion

The title sequence came together well, matching the tone of the how-to video. It’s fast, bold, and to the point—just like hockey. The use of yellow and blue to introduce the credits adds a nice punch, and the close-ups of the gear keep things visually interesting while previewing what the tutorial is about.
